History of Ilfracombe Ilfracombe has been settled since the Iron Age , when the Dumnonii the Roman name for the inhabitants of the South-West established a hill fort on the dominant hill, Hillsborough formerly Hele’s Barrow. The origin of the town’s name has two possible sources. The first is that it is a derivative of the Anglo-Saxon Alfreinscoma – by which name it was noted in the Liber Exoniensis of The second origin is that the name Ilfracombe was derived from Norse illf bad , Anglo-Saxon yfel evil ford and Anglo-Saxon cumb valley perhaps from a Celtic source compare Welsh cwm , thus ‘The valley with the bad ford’.
It is also said to be haunted. It is recorded that the lands by the church were part of the estate owned by Champernowne family , while those by the harbour belonged to the Bouchier family: Nicholas’s Chapel on Lantern Hill Because of the natural layout of the harbour, Ilfracombe became a significant safe port registered port of refuge on the Bristol Channel. It also had trade routes between Kinsale and Tenby , which made the port stronger.

In the Brittonic , Devon is known as Welsh: Dewnens, each meaning “deep valleys. William Camden , in his edition of Britannia, described Devon as being one part of an older, wider country that once included Cornwall: THAT region which, according to the Geographers, is the first of all Britaine, and, growing straiter still and narrower, shooteth out farthest into the West, [ One erroneous theory is that the “shire” suffix is due to a mistake in the making of the original letters patent for the Duke of Devonshire , resident in Derbyshire.

Could not subscribe, try again laterInvalid Email The chief inspector of hospitals in the UK says he has “serious concerns” about North Devon District Hospital after a “disappointing” inspection report left the trust rated as “Requires Improvement”. The report from the Care Quality Commission CQC , which was released today, shows that both maternity and outpatient services at the hospital have got worse since the hospital was last inspected.
A screenshot of the Northern Devon Healthcare Trust’s CQC rating The CQC had also been notified about four serious incidents at the hospital’s Ladywell maternity unit in just five months where healthcare professionals did not assess and respond promptly to the risk involved. Read it in full here He said: The relationship between the midwives and the consultants was poor, adding an unnecessary risk to the safety of their patients.
Since the inspection the trust has been responding to these safety concerns and making changes to lessen the risks. We will in any case return in the near future to check progress. Incidents were not always recorded and staff did not always receive feedback when raising incidents. In end of life care staff were compassionate and kind. The Trust has been told that it must send a report setting out action it will take to meet these requirements and CQC inspectors will return to check in due course.
Darryn Allcorn, director of nursing, quality and workforce at the Trust, said: We are confident that they will see that we have taken forward their recommendations to improve our services. The letter, from RCOG lead assessor Andrea Galimberti, criticised “demotivated” staff, a “disregard for obstetric guidelines” and “poor attendance at mandatory training sessions” by medical staff.
